Gil,

Those clowns will try to sell you anything... I use Voicestream (GSM) with a Nokia 8290 and a Palm Vx (through the IRda port) and I don't have their stupid Data service. Here is the real deal (this is a copy/paste from a previous email I posted):

>
> 1. Your Palm Vx is ready to connect to the Internet out of the box. The previous Palm V was not able to (OS v3.1) unless you downloaded some patches from Palm's site. Now, Palm Vx (OS v3.5) is ready per se.
>
> 2. Your Voicestream phone, as any other GSM phone, has data capabilities per se. You have to call the people from VS and tell them that you want to enable the Data Feature on your phone. This is at no additional cost to you, but be careful that they will try to sell you the Data Stream feature that
> runs about $35 month! Not good... Just tell them that you want to use your Data Feature and voice minutes for data transfer without any of their stupid (and expensive) data packages.

> - Go to Prefs -> Connection -> New
> - Name it Nokia8290 or Molly, whatever you like :-)
> - Connection Method: IrCOMM to Modem
> - Dialing: TouchTone
> - Volume: Low (my preference)

> - Init String: leave blank

> - Type in your ISP (i.e. Earthlink) info there: Service name, user, passwd
> - Connection: select the Nokia8290 (or Molly) connection you just created
> - Phone: your ISP access phone
> - Click Details
> - Connection Type: PPP
> - Idle timeout: Power off
> - Check Query DNS
> - Check Automatic on IP Address
> - Click on Script and verify it is empty (End as first option)

> - Place your Palm infront of your Nokia, IRDAs should be facing at each other
> - On you Nokia go Menu -> Infrared -> Select (you will see an icon blinking on your phone screen now)
> - On your Palm go to Prefs -> Network
> - Verify that your ISP info and the Nokia (or Molly) entry is there and punch Connect
> - You'll see that the Palm "orders" the Nokia to dial to your ISP and presto! If you see a blinking line on the upper right corner of your Palm's screen, that means you are online (needless to say, you will see screens on your Palm saying that you are dialing, connecting, verifying name, etc).

> You also have to verify that your ISP can handle low speed connections (like the 9600 we are defining on the Palm) because some don't (i.e. MSN). I have successfully achieved 19200.

I hope this helps,

Cgsolano
