Tip: Windows Mobile - Troubleshooting Bluetooth Sync

By Amy Mayer
May 5, 2008

We initially ran into some troubling trying to sync a Windows Mobile 6-run Verizon XV6800 to a laptop running Windows XP via Bluetooth. But, the problem seems to have been the device and not the technology or the instructions. So, to take your Outlook Contacts, Calendar, Tasks, Notes and even Email with you on the go, and then synchronize changes between your Mobile device and your Windows XP computer, here's the strategy:

Install Active Sync on your computer (this can be done from the CD that comes with your Mobile device, or via the Microsoft download page).

Turn on Bluetooth on the Handheld by pressing the Comm Manager button on the right edge of the device and ensuring the X does not appear over the Bluetooth icon. If it does, press the icon to remove the X. Then tap "Settings." (You can also reach Bluetooth settings from the Today screen by tapping Start'Settings'Bluetooth.)

Following the prompts on screen to establish a relationship between your handheld and your computer. Once the partnership is established, open Active Sync on your handheld, tap Menu, select Connect via Bluetooth.

If your connection isn't active, you'll be prompted to enter a passkey, which you will also need to enter on your computer when it recognizes the Bluetooth connection request.

Open Active Sync on your computer and it should automatically connect to your handheld. If it doesn't, click on File'Connection settings and manually request that it connect.

Once you have completed a sync, conserve your handheld battery power by turning off Bluetooth until you next have a need for it.
