A couple of years ago palmOne introduced the Tungsten C, its first handheld with integrated Wi-Fi.

Other than the release of an 802.11b Secure Digital card, the company has been quiet on the WLAN front since—at a time when every other handheld vendor introduced numerous devices with WLAN technology.

The Internet rumor mill recently conjured the first indications that the pioneering PDA company may finally follow up the aging Tungsten C.

A number of names circulate for this mysterious device (Tungsten 2005, Tungsten C2, Tungsten T6), but the moniker most rumors seem to settle on is the LifeDrive (see top image), possibly its code name. The most interesting feature of LifeDrive is a 4 GB MicroDrive, a massive amount of storage for a PDA.

It may also include:

  • 416MHz Intel Bulverde processor
  • 32MB SDRAM
  • 802.11b Wi-Fi
  • USB 2.0
  • Bluetooth 1.1
  • 480x320 TFT display at 18-bit color
  • Palm OS Garnet (although we think Palm OS Cobalt, PalmSource's next-generation platform, could be a possibility)
  • Secure Digital Slot
  • Virtual Graffiti 2 character-entry area
  • Five-way navigation control
  • Rectangular group of software activation buttons

We could see this device—along with the Tungsten E2 and possibly a sequel to the Zire 72 called the Zire 73—as early as this month. Reports say LifeDrive should sell for about $500.
