GoAmerica Expands Relationship With IBM

wireless company GoAmerica has expanded its relationship with IBM with the aim of delivering enterprise applications and software systems to a wide range of mobile devices, including laptop computers, PDAs and cell phones.

GoAmerica said it plans to integrate its Go.Web technology with IBM's WebSphere Everyplace Access (WEA) to provide users access to behind the firewall data on virtually any data network and device. The company said WEA provides links to back-end enterprise software systems, eliminating the need for re-coding each database for a specific mobile device. According to GoAmerica, Go.Web compresses, encrypts and reformats data for optimal access on any wireless data device and network.

The WEA toolset, when integrated with Go.Web, is slated to allow for proprietary data from the same application to be pushed to different wireless devices and platforms based on user preference. For example, a sales team does not have to be standardized on one device or data network to access the same data from a Laptop computer, RIM Handheld, Pocket PC-based device or other PDA.

Additionally, GoAmerica said Go.Web enables several modes of connectivity, providing online and offline capabilities. For instance, if a salesperson is accessing data on a train, and travels through a tunnel while transferring data, the device will go into a disconnected mode, preserve the data that has not been transferred and then reconnect with the network once exiting the tunnel without losing any data.

In December 2001, GoAmerica and IBM Global Services announced they would jointly develop, market and implement wireless solutions for the enterprise. In June of this year, IBM's Personal Computing Division announced it would sell RIM devices and service from GoAmerica.
