Buying A Palm Device

Are you considering the purchase of a PDA? You're probably wondering which machine is the best buy, and even whether or not you should buy a Pilot or something else like a Palm-size PC, or Psion. You're probably also wondering whether or not you should just go ahead and purchase a laptop computer. Well, stop searching aimlessly. We've been through this battle and have the information you need to help you make your decision.

Decide Palm III, V, VII First...
The first decision you will make is which machine to buy. This decision will be largely based on what you want to do with it once you get it. If you're looking to keep contacts, scheduling information, and to-do lists, the Palm IIIe is the way to go. If you're looking to surf the web, send e-mail, etc., you ought to consider a Palm V or Palm VII. If you just need wireless e-mail then look at the Palm VII but if you want true wireless capabilities look into the Palm V or Vx. There are special wireless modems available for the Palm V that will allow you to get Internet access wirelessly. Also, the Palm Vx has 8mb of memory while the Palm VII has only 2mb. Be sure to check out our hardware database for specifications on the various devices.

New or Used...
Although it's obviously better to buy a new machine, you can sometimes get a great deal on a used machine that will do the trick for you. If you don't need all the bells and whistles of the latest and greatest units, perhaps a used machine is the way to go. Are you wondering whether or not you really need one of these gadgets? If so, it may be beneficial to look into the purchase of a used machine so you can save a few bucks and still get a machine that works well. If it turns out that you use it a lot you can always purchase a new machine later. A great place to start the hunt for a used machine is the Classifieds Board. You find all kinds of FOR SALE listings. You might also check out some of the online auction houses who sometimes have great deals.

The Purchase...
Once you've investigated all the options, there's one last step, purchasing the machine. You'll need to decide whether you want to purchase your unit online, or at a local retailer. There are definite advantages to both. Let's take them one at a time:

Purchasing Online
It's usually less expensive as online retailers don't have the overhead that local retailers have. Also, there is usually no sales tax since you are most likely purchasing the unit outside of your home state (some states still require tax). Another thing to remember is you can usually find units online that some local retailers do not carry.

Purchasing Offline
The most obvious advantage to purchasing your unit offline is that you can see it before you buy it. There is a lot to be said for being able to handle the unit. Typing a few test documents is nice because you can get a feel for the keyboard's responsiveness. You can also see how heavy the unit is and whether or not it can fit in your pocket, bag or briefcase. The other thing about purchasing locally is that it's easier to exchange the unit if you happen to get a bad one. Most of the larger retailers offer a 30 day money back guarantee, making exchanges a snap.

To help you along in your decision we've setup the Shopping Page with all the information and links you need to take you online, or to a local retailer in your area.
