BankBook is a program that will allow you to track the flow of your money. You can set up separate records for all of your different accounts. You can set up records for your checking, savings, your credit cards, or any other accounts you may have. Once you've created the accounts and entered the current balance you're basically ready to begin.

Adding a transaction is quick and easy. The author claims that he can enter his transaction while standing at the tellers window waiting for his receipt. I usually keep my Palm in my car and enter my transaction once returning, but I think it would be possible to enter a transaction while waiting for your receipt to be printed. To add a new transaction you simply tap on the button labeled new. You choose the type of transaction (ATM, Card, Check #, Withdraw, or deposit) enter the amount and choose the account. You can also enter a short description if you need to.

In BankBook you can choose to view the transactions for a single account, or you can view the transaction list for all of your accounts. If you choose to view a single account the balance shown at the bottom would be for that single account. If you view the records for all accounts the balance shown at the bottom would be for the net worth of all your accounts combined.

Pros: Simplicity, simplicity, simplicity. Did I mention that BankBook was easy to use? One of the most appealing aspects of this program was the ease of use. Feeling that I am fairly competent in figuring out how to use software I rarely read manuals. BankBook was no exception. I installed the program without reading the manual, and I was able to easily figure out how to use it within a couple of minutes. Another feature that I really like it the ability to Void a transaction. Being able to Void a transaction eliminates unnecessary work if someone gives you a bad check, or if you decide to put a stop payment on a check. BankBook automatically updates your balance, so if you weren't offered the opportunity to void a transaction you could have been left with some big headaches.

Cons: While in the course of testing the program on my IIIc I noticed that BankBook encountered several Fatal Exceptions or other errors. The program was stable, but anytime that you encounter Fatal Exceptions or other errors requiring a reset it can be a hassle. One feature that I felt was lacking was the ability to edit the transaction types. I would have created new transaction types for transfers, and for payments made to my credit cards, but I was forced to label my credit card payments as deposits.

Summary: On a scale of 1-10 I'd give this program 8 1/2. The few minor inconveniences that I found were enough to keep the score below 9, but I still feel that BankBook is a good program. Like the author says in his description, if it prevents you from getting charged for bounding a check or exceeding your credit limit then it has done its job.
