Sim City Reviewed

The Palm Computing version of Sim City released by Atelier Software is not a clone of the PC game. It is the official release of Sim City for the Palm. The latest version of the game works on both color and b/w Palms.

I played Sim City on a Palm IIIc and a Palm Vx. The game played acceptably on both machines, but there was a noticeable speed decrease on the IIIc. I also noticed that the scrolling was smoother on the Vx than the IIIc.

SimCity offers different maps that will highlight a particular theme. Here are a couple different examples for you to check out.

Monitor your approval rate and check different statistical categories. Keep tabs on what your sims feel are the biggest problems in your city.

If you want more of a challenge try your hand at maintaining control after one of the natural, or in some cases not so natural, disasters. Check ot the damage done to this peaceful city after a few disasters. For those of you who don't desire to feel all of nature's wrath there is an option to disable the disasters.

Pros: The biggest draw of this game is the authenticity with respect to the classic Sim City PC game. Atelier stayed as true as possible to the original PC game. They were so true to the PC game that even the notorius "fund" cheat is in the Palm version of the game. Those of you familiar with the "fund" cheat also know about the "religious implications" of using it. The consequences of cheating was also built into the game. I give this game two thumbs up for playability and enjoyability. As always those are two of the most important factors in determining whether or not a game is worth sticking on my Palm. The color support is really great. Atelier went to great lengths to ensure that the color graphics were worthy of the Sim line of games.

Cons: Although the game is nearly identical to the PC version there is one notable difference. When you place a tile on the screen the part of the tile that you place in the Palm version is the upper left corner. In the PC version you place the center tile. That difference caused some difficulty the first few times I played the game. The only other problem I had with Sim City for the Palm was that some of the features in the b/w version of the game can be difficult to see. That is mostly due to the small size of the Palm screen, but it still is something that negatively affects the game. Another drawback is the lack of a downloadable demo of the game. I realize that many times in life you must simply buy without trying, but I feel that a platform like the Palm is one in which there is heavy emphasis on "Try before you Buy."

Summary: If you enjoy playing any of the Sim line of games, especially Sim City classic then this maybe a game that you'll want to add to your Palm. At $29.95 the game is very reasonably priced considering the magnitude of the game and the authenticity with respect to the classic PC version of the game. Do you have what it takes to make it to the top of the Sim City high score list? Check out Atelier Software's Website for more details on Sim City or any of their other products.
