WinCE Suit and Palm Suit Reviewed

By Palm Boulevard Staff
February 05, 1999

It seems like only yesterday when I couldn't find a satisfactory case for my Velo 1. Sure there were cases advertised in the magazine that came with my Velo, but there were all too big, and too expensive. $100 for a case? I don't think so. Well those days are over. There are many cases available these days and I've just spent the day with two of them from MarWare.

The WinCE Suit and the Palm Suit are both made of neoprene (wet suit material). They seem to be manufactured very well and they fit tightly around the machines. They have reinforced spines, solid stitching, heavy duty zippers, and handstrap. They both have a pocket on the outside and they both come with little velcro stickers to keep your machine in tight.

These suits are definitely for people who don't want to carry around any extra baggage. There is not much room for anything but your machine. This is fine for some people, but if you're looking for a case to carry extra batteries, or pens, etc., you'd better look elsewhere. Frankly, I like having 2 cases for my Windows CE machine. One for when I'm close to home, and one for when I'm on the road. When I'm on the road I need to carry a lot more like extra batteries, or a phone cable, but when I'm in town I really just need the machine itself. In that regard, this case is perfect for someone like me. Also, you can use the unit while it is in the case. This is a huge thing for me. I hate having to take my machine out of it's case to use it.

Another thing to consider is the lack of extra padding. If you're clumbsy and you drop your H/PC a lot, you might want a thicker case. This is great for me, but it does not offer a lot of padding against dropping. The Palm Suit comes with a hard plastic insert which should protect your screen, but the WinCE Suit did not have anything like that. Just be careful with your machine and you should be okay.

The WinCE Suit has inside dimensions of 7.25" x 4" x 1" and fits the following units...

  • Casio Casiopeia
  • Casio A-20
  • Compaq PC Companion
  • Hitachi Handheld PC
  • HP Palmtop PC 320LX, 360 LX
  • LG Phenom GP40M
  • NEC MobilePro
  • NEC MobilePro 700
  • Phillips Velo 1
  • Sharp Mobilon HC-4500

The Palm Suit has inside dimensions of 5.25" x 3.75" x .75" and fits the following units...

  • PalmIII
  • Palm Professional
  • Casio Casiopeia E-10
  • Casio Casiopeia E-11
  • Everex Freestyle
  • Palmax PD-300
  • Samsung Infogear

Okay...so how much do they cost you ask? Well surprisingly they are rather reasonable. The WinCE Suit is $27.95, and the Palm Suit is $24.95. Not bad I'd say. They can be purchased online through MarWare's web site (link below). I don't know if they are sold through any other retail outlets.

Overall these are good cases. I don't have any realy complaints. I like the fact that they provide a snug fit and that they can be left on the unit while you're using it. The quality is there, and the price is right so this one gets a thumbs up from me. Check it out!
